The History Of The Telephone And How It Continues To Change
The telephone is an essential device used daily by just about every American in the nation . The technology surrounding the phone seems to continue to amaze many and how quickly the phone has changed from 1876 when Alexander Graham Bell invented what he named the “harmonic telegraph”. This article will discuss how the phone got its start to the different types of phones that exist today like the mobile phone, business phone systems brands such as Allworx and VolP, live video phones, and phones for specific conditions like the wilderness, space or in the ocean .
Alexander Graham Bell wanted to make the telegraph better which had been the main source of communicating for three decades by the late 1800’s. Since the telegraph was a wire based electrical system, much like the phone, the invention kind of happened by accident. He patented the phone which he originally named the harmonic telegraph in 1876 when learning sound and voices could be carried over the wires rather than signals. With the invention of the telephone, the telegraph basically became extinct because the phone was much better . Mr. Bell would be pleased to see the continuing advances of his original invention going on today.
The rate of technology and change for the telephone over the past 30 years is quite astounding . In the 1960’s telephones were connected by above the ground wiring using a main operator who handled the flow of the calls, basically. Each person had a phone number and to dial it, a rotary wheel was used and remained that way for some time. In more rural areas, party line type of phones were still being used where others could hear your conversations with your friends at the same time which gave people no privacy.
The 80’s is when the telephone began to change with the start of push button dialing, car phones and cordless phones all making their debut . To be able to have a phone conversation in your car or the ability to walk around your home while talking on the phone and not be tethered to the phone by the cord were thought to be enormous advances to the phone. In the late 80’s the cellular or mobile phone started to become popular too which was even more advanced than a phone plugged into your automobile . Now, with computer technology the options for calling someone are endless and continue to change almost every six months. Cell phones now do a lot more than just call someone as they have access to the internet now. If you want to see the person you are having a conversation with, then have a video talk with them using a web cam to be more connected.
Astronauts, deep sea divers and people going into the deep wilderness can all use special phones too using various frequencies such as satellite to make a call. The amount of lines a business can accommodate is huge also with high tech business phone systems being implemented at a majority of businesses making it a lot more efficient company .
