He says that stent-assisted embolization is ideal for critically ill patients. In the US, embolization is the preferred treatment for ruptured aneurysms (compared to surgery), but it can be extremely challenging when the width of the bulge is particularly large. Using metal coils and a balloon has shown to make the procedure easier, Finnish radiologists noted.
