A model’s dream come true
Estée Lauder Model Search Winner 2007 Wan Noraishah Samsudin is living her dream — modelling.
The past year, for Wan Noraishah Samsudin, has been an eye opener.
“I learnt a lot about myself and what I was capable of,” says the 21-year-old student, better known as Aishah to her friends, who was crowned 2007’s Estée Lauder Model Search winner.

Over 3,000 participants took part in the search, held for the first time by Estée Lauder. Aishah was picked during the finale in Mid Valley Megamall.
What was it like to be crowned the winner?
“It was definitely memorable,” says Aishah. “The finale was most exciting. We were given a crash course on modelling basics by Andrews Models and we only had two rehearsals before the finale. The whole experience was intense but fun. It was surreal to win as well.”
Winning the coveted title paved the way for Aishah to begin a professional modelling career. Although she is currently pursuing it on a part-time basis, Aishah has been offered several interesting projects.
“I’ve done mainly television commercials, such as Palmolive and Tropicana Twisters,” she says. “The most challenging one was when I had to shoot for 26 hours straight for a television commercial! Still, it was a great experience and I enjoyed it.”
Now that she’s had a taste of the limelight, what does Aishah think about modelling?
“It was all worth it. My life has definitely taken a dramatic turn for the better. Winning the Estée Lauder Model Search has given me the exposure I need for a career in modelling,” says Aishah.
“But more than anything else, it has given me a confidence that builds character. Before the competition, I was naïve. Now, after dealing with so many different people, my social skills are better. I am able to interact with people from all walks of life. I accept criticism better and have learned to deal with rejection as well.”
On top of that, the once-shy Aishah says the experience has taught her all about inner and outer beauty.
“It is all about being yourself and, more importantly, being happy. You may have outer beauty but not inner beauty. One cannot exist without the other,” she says.

“I learnt that it is ok to be myself. There are times when I would go for casting and not get the role. Instead of feeling rejected, I’ve learnt to accept the outcome. Sometimes some things are not meant to be.
“Winning has been a great journey of self-discovery. I urge everyone to go for their dreams; you never know what you might get until you go for it and give it your all.”
Being exposed to the fashion and modelling world has also opened up Aishah’s eyes about the industry.
“Being a model is a lot of hard work and you need a great amount of discipline and determination to survive.”
And like all budding models, Aishah must have an international model that she looks up to?
“I admire Kate Moss for her style and the way she overcame recent adversity to emerge even better and more successful,” she says.
“Her look is truly versatile and she has proven to be relevant even today,” she adds.
Here’s hoping that Aishah is on her way to becoming Malaysia’s very own top model!
